Some Thoughts

So I went and saw the DaVinci Code the other day. I can understand why it got the reviews it did. It was rather cheesy and the acting was rather lame. As an action flick, it was pretty good and it was great that there was no sex and the main characters didn't even fall in love, which is cool to see cuz usually that's what happens in these kinds of films. And the women were dressed fairly modestly which was a nice surprise. But I digress.

I suppose I can kind of see why everyone is making a big huff over the whole thing, the theology is messed up something fierce, and regardless of how bad the movie was, the book is supposed to be well written and very persuasive. Regardless, I found the whole thing laughable, literally I was chuckling in the theatre because their ideas seem to be grasping at straws...it's easy for me to saw this because I know the Truth, but for someone who doesn't, I understand how they would try to grasp those straws tightly. If only people would actually do a little independant research into what Dan Brown has written, they'd see that he took a few not-well-known facts and expanded on them with his imagination. Like the Priory of Scion, for example, was proved to be a hoax or that there actually is a Gospel of Phillip, but it's proven that it was written well after the other gospels, was not actually written by Phillip and doesn't mesh at all with the Bible but rather is a Gnostic document. These aren't difficult things to find out but people are such sheep (or should I say goats) would would rather be told what to believe instead of finding it out for themselves. It's frustrating, to say the least; my mom absolutely loves Brown's book and it's good that she asks questions but she refuses to actually hear the answers to those questions.

Which is why I think the church is putting too much focus on the book itself rather than on the major heart issue which is driving all this skepticism and misplaced belief. One of the major reasons people so readily believe the DaVinci Code, is becuase they have something against the church, specifically the Catholic church. Over the past couple of centuries, Satan has had no need to even work at defaming Christ's name, the church has done that well enough on her own. The reason I believe this is because I was raised Catholic and though I know many true and sincere Christians who are Catholic, I also know how empty of a religion it can be and I know many people, including my own parents, who have been burned by the church. My mom was trying to make this point, that the Catholic church could certainly be hiding something and look at all the power they hold, and look at what they've done in God's name, and therefore, Christianity is in question (very similar to what Brown says). And I'm like, no, because then you're having the Catholic church represent all of Christianity which is like saying that we will classify all Germans by looking at what the Nazi's have done. A harsh comparison maybe, but valid

Essentially, I think that as Christians, if we are going to address this whole DaVince Code issue, we need to look at the heart of each individual we speak to and rather than bash the book entirely, see why each person would rather believe that instead of the Bible as it is presented. That's my thoughts anyways. Like Charis, I'm interested to hear what all of you think. TTYL.
